True unity is not something that we can obtain by our own efforts, by forcing people into conformity to a particular ideology. Without the submitting of ourselves to the revelation of God in Christ, our prayer and mission will only be a sad reflection of ourselves. It is only in Christ alone that our rich diversity can be fruitful for the body as a whole and reflect the wonder and glory of the gospel to a world that is in dire need of eternal life and salvation.

It is not nails that hold Christ upon the Cross but love. The Cross shows love triumphs over death. It call us to follow the example of Christ in humble obedience to the Father as we bear the trials and crosses of our life. It tells us that we shall never be forsaken by God and that one day we shall hears those words “today you will be with me in paradise.”

“We are of courage … so whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.”

In this verse, Paul is speaking of the desire to be ‘at home’ with the Lord in heavenly glory rather than in exile here in the body on earth. Yet he counsels courage in whatever state we are in, because of the hope of what is to be. In doing so he recognises that there is a connection between the fullness of the Kingdom which is to come and the arena of the fallen world in which we live at the present.
