The Rosary is a Scripture-based prayer. It begins with the Apostles’ Creed, which summarises the great mysteries of the Christian faith. The Lord’s Prayer, which introduces each “mystery”, is from the Gospels. The first part of the Hail Mary is the angel’s words announcing Christ’s birth and Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary. Pope St Pius V officially added the second part of the Hail Mary. The Mysteries of the Rosary centre on the events of Christ’s life. There are four sets of Mysteries: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and — added by Pope St John Paul II in 2002 — the Luminous.
The word “mystery” here simply means something which is inexplicable or beyond human comprehension. The events we recall in the Rosary are things which God has caused to happen for our salvation. From earliest times, mankind has sinned and turned against God: the Rosary contains twenty ways in which God has worked to return us to him.
The repetition in the Rosary is meant to lead one into restful and contemplative prayer related to each Mystery. The gentle repetition of the words helps us to enter into the silence of our hearts, where Christ’s spirit dwells. The Rosary can be said privately or with a group: the form here is the customary one which other Catholics will also use.
Using an actual set of rosary beads, as shown in the picture, is usual as many find it helpful, particularly once they become familiar with the mysteries and the prayers. But if you’re not used to it, you can follow using this page and count each “decade” of ten Hail Marys on your fingers. Everything you need is laid out below.
Pope St John Paul II introduced this method of saying the Rosary through the week, although different patterns can be adopted, including varying what is said on Sundays.
On Monday and Saturday, meditate on the Joyful Mysteries:

The Mysteries of the Holy Rosary
Introduction
Start at the Crucifix of the Rosary.
Bless yourself:How to bless yourself
✠ In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Say the Apostles' Creed:Actions during the Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and ✠ life everlasting. Amen.
On the first bead, which is not a group and may be slightly larger,
Say the Lord's Prayer:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Then there's a group of three beads, which you can use to pray for an increase in faith, hope and charity with the three Hail Marys, or three other particular intentions:
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Hail Mary...
Hail Mary...
After the third small bead,
Say the Gloria: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

You've reached the next bead on its own.

You've reached the next bead on its own.
Announce the second Luminous Mystery: The Wedding at Cana and Christ's manifestation: John 2:1–11
After the last Mystery, you reach the medallion, which is used for the conclusion.
Say the Salve Regina: Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy: our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
O God, whose only-begotten Son by his life, death and resurrection has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life; grant, we beseech thee, that by meditating upon these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
There are two optional prayers which are often added.
The Memorare: Remember, O most blessed Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, we fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, our Mother. To you do we come; before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions, but in your mercy, hear and answer them. Amen.
End as you started with the Sign of the Cross.
Bless yourself:How to bless yourself

It was fitting that she, who had kept her virginity intact in childbirth, should keep her own body free from all corruption even after death. It was fitting that she, who had carried the Creator as a child at her breast, should dwell in the divine tabernacles. It was fitting that the spouse, whom the Father had taken to himself, should live in the divine mansions. It was fitting that she, who had seen her Son upon the cross and who had thereby received into her heart the sword of sorrow which she had escaped in the act of giving birth to him, should look upon him as he sits with the Father. It was fitting that God's Mother should possess what belongs to her Son, and that she should be honoured by every creature as the Mother and as the handmaid of God.

Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; and behold, a voice from heaven, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

On the third day there was a marriage at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; Jesus also was invited to the marriage, with his disciples. When the wine failed, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “O woman, what have you to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now six stone jars were standing there, for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the steward of the feast.” So they took it. When the steward of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward of the feast called the bridegroom and said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first; and when men have drunk freely, then the poor wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.” This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
